WOMEN'S ISSUE IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA
Abstract
One of the main progressive features of the political system of the Democratic Republic of Georgia is the introduction of mechanisms for protecting the equality of citizens of both sexes, which was recognized primarily at the political arena. Immediately after the declaration of independence, female politicians were actively involved in the political activities of the Democratic Republic of Georgia. This is evidenced by the participation of women in the self-government and constituent assembly elections.
In addition to women members of representative-legislative or self-governing bodies, independent female activists, female professors or spouses of politicians engaged in active social and political activities. They opened reading rooms, organized evenings. They were actively involved in the defense of the republic; they organized the activities of the auxiliary committees of the front.
In addition to politically active women, many women appear in the theatre and music sphere of the Republican period. Cultural-educational and charity evenings are held. At that time, it was still very difficult for women to appear on the stage, because the main duty of a woman was only to take care of the family. Despite the opposition in the society, many women from the period of the Democratic Republic of Georgia begin to "step into the centre of attention”. Georgian-language operas, the first Georgian ballet are staged with their participation; During this period, the first Georgian feature film "Kristine" and others were made.
The occupation of Georgia by Bolshevik Russia stopped the development of the country in a western way and many things were forgotten due to Soviet repressions. That is why there are few reports about the women who worked a century ago, who broke the clichés and came out on a wide stage.
Key words: Democratic Republic of Georgia; politics; cultural life; women.
