TRANSLATIONS BY ARSEN OF IQALTO IN GEORGIAN MANUSCRIPTS OF LENTEN TRIODION

Abstract

There are several editions of "Lenten Triodion" in the Georgian language. The creation of the recent one, the Hellenophile edition, is connected with the names of St. Ephraim the Lesser and St. Arsen of Iqalto. The peculiarity of this edition is that it is based on and takes into account the translation of St. George the Hagiorite.

In the third part Par.5 and following it in the K 79 manuscript, the name of St. Arsen of Iqalto is confirmed in the titles of two hymns. These are the Hymns of the Second Coming created by St. Theodore of Studios (the Canon of Sunday of the Meat-Fare) and the Great Canon by St. Andrew of Crete (used to be performed once, on the Thursday of the fifth Seven).

In addition to the listed hymns, according to Korneli Kekelidze, Arsen should have translated the canons of the Saturday of the Meat-Fare (also known as Saturday of the dead), the Thursday of the forgiveness’ seven and the Saturday of the first seven. This assumption is based on manuscript A 431.

The article discusses these hymns according to both A 431 and other important lists of "Lenten Triodion". For the completeness of the analysis, the material is compared with two ancient Greek manuscripts of "Lenten Triodion" (Sin. 734-735; Vat. 771).

At this stage of the research, it was revealed that in A 431 and other manuscripts we examined, the Athonic translation of the listed hymns, namely, by St. George the Hagiorite, is confirmed.
