STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF DOUBLE NEGATION IN MODERN ENGLISH
Abstract
Linguistic negation belongs to the group of universals that is common for all languages.
Double negation in English, as the complex and multifaceted linguistic phenomenon is chracterised by a wide spectrum of functioning in the language. It has always been the issue of particular interest to linguists. In speech double negation may be expressed explicitly, implicitly and in some cases may bear the stylistic colouring as well. In modern English Its functioning is mainly directed to the realization of two goals 1) in the sentence two or more negative words cancel each other and the sentence acquires opposite- positive meaning, 2) Two or more negatives in the sentence according the certain context give more negative effect to the sentence. Double negation can mark the forms of dialects and informal speech. Such kind of diversity of double negation occurs quite often in English that contradicts norms and usage of communicative activities based on the theories and principles traditionally formulated in English grammar course books which strongly advocate for the correct acquisition of the language.
