THE ARTISTIC FUNCTIONS OF THE ELLIPSE IN FOLKLORE AND FICTION
Abstract
The ellipsis has been used in the text since the ancient times as a means of conveying thoughts and ideas succinctly, in a way, it is a poetic device. It differs from other artistic methods as it is studied both in linguistics (punctuation when omitting a word or phrase in a sentence) and in literature. This article is dedicated to highlighting the functions of the ellipsis artistic load based on folklore examples and literary texts.
Comparative-typological and comparative methods are used.
In the main part, we tried to find an ellipsis in the materials existed before us by researchers and to examine its artistic functions very schematically. The main thing for us turned out to be that the ellipsis infrequently expresses a hint hidden in the given text, which is accompanied by a succinct expression of the meaning of this or that grammatical part of speech (mainly a verb, a pronoun). From the artistic functions of the ellipsis, the specificity of laconic transmission is significant which is observed in the folklore materials (mainly in proverbs) and carries a deeper, semantic meaning in Niko Lortkipanidze's work, which contributes to the artistic mastery of conveying the instantaneous perception of the impression characteristic of the impressionist style, which was evident even in the results we had made.
